Baylor College of Medicine

Q and A with genetic counseling student Blake Vuocolo

What interested you in science?

I learned two life-changing things when I won my eighth-grade science fair for culturing bacteria from restaurant lemons: First, never put lemon slices in your water, and second, I love science. Science appeals to me because we can constantly learn more about the underlying mechanisms that make us who we are and use our understanding to improve the overall quality of life for everyone. Genetic counseling seemed like the perfect career for me because I can share my love of science with patients so that they feel empowered to make health decisions for themselves and their families.

What brought you to Baylor?

I came to Baylor because of the school’s global presence and dedication to advancing the field of human genetics through research and increasing access to genomic information worldwide. As someone who is passionate about expanding genetic counseling services to under-resourced populations and regions, it was important for me to find a program that shared this vision.

What are your thoughts on the Genetic Counseling program so far?

My training thus far has exceeded my expectations, and I know that the clinical experiences, coursework and research opportunities I have received during this program are unparalleled. I am grateful that my fellow classmates and I have the honor to pioneer Baylor’s unique third-year research fellowship track and partake in important research projects at Baylor.

What do you think about the recent accreditation of the program?

The Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling’s decision to award Baylor’s program the maximum period of accreditation is a testament to the dedication and passion that program directors, faculty, staff and students bring to our training program daily.

Our theme for this year’s Alumni Reunion and Awards is “What a Journey!” What’s the one word you would use to describe your journey to and at Baylor so far?
