Meet Selina Poon, M.D., Res. ’09, pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Southern California
Are there any professional highlights or accomplishments that you would like to share?
I’m currently a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Southern California. Some of my leadership experience includes serving on editorial boards like the Operative Techniques in Orthopedics (2022-present) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Now as a member at large (2022-2024). I’m also an ambassador in the American Orthopaedic Surgeon/University of Southern California APEX Leadership Program (2022-2023), to name a few.
Why did you decide to pursue healthcare?
When I was young, I wanted to be a princess. Fortunately, I realized that I belonged in medicine and eventually orthopedic surgery. I love the fact that I am making a difference in my patients’ lives every day.
Why did you choose to attend Baylor College of Medicine?
I believe Baylor chose me. Since orthopedic surgery is such a competitive specialty, I was lucky to match at Baylor for my orthopedic surgery training.
Are there any memorable moments from your time at Baylor that you would like to share?
Graduation was memorable for me. I had a real sense of accomplishment knowing that I had completed residency and knowing that I was well prepared for orthopedic surgery.
Are there any Baylor faculty who had a significant impact on you during your time at Baylor?
Dr. Michael Epstein (retired professor) had a significant impact on me. He was such an advocate for residents and was always a great source of not only knowledge but also wisdom. I have learned so much about hand surgery and more importantly about life from him.
Is there any advice that you would like to share with current residents and fellows?
Residency is hard but there are always people who are willing to help you. Do not be afraid to ask for help. Look to your friends, colleagues, mentors and family for the support you need on your career path. Regardless, the profession we have chosen is rewarding, and I wouldn't choose any other (most days).
