Their goal was simply to address the shortage of doctors in North Texas.
Over the decades, generation after generation of visionary physician-scientists, dedicated educators, passionate students and generous alumni, donors and friends have transformed that small medical school. Today — — Baylor College of Medicine stands as an internationally recognized center for cutting-edge research, education and patient care, and serves as the cornerstone of the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world.
A key milestone in Baylor’s history was the arrival of Michael E. DeBakey, M.D., in 1948 as the new chair of the Department of Surgery.
His impact was enormous, and his influence is still felt today, thanks to innovations he pioneered in heart surgery, including the first successful coronary bypass operation and the first successful use of a partial artificial heart, called a left ventricular bypass pump. Dr. DeBakey also set and improved healthcare standards worldwide.
As President, Chancellor and later Chancellor Emeritus of Baylor College of Medicine until his death in 2008, Dr. DeBakey played a significant role in shaping Baylor’s esteemed reputation. Today, Baylor ranks #1 in the nation for its genetics research program, among many other honors.
Baylor moved to Houston in 1943, and four years later took up residence at the new Texas Medical Center. We now care for more patients admitted to Texas Medical Center hospitals than any other physician group. We’re proud of our hometown! Our Center for Educational Outreach works closely with schools in Houston and around South Texas to build healthier communities, promote STEM teaching (particularly in the biosciences), inspire and encourage young people with an interest in exploring medical or scientific careers and provide opportunities for pursuing that interest from primary school through to post-graduate education.
