Smriti A. Agrawal, Ph.D. ’18 is being honored by Baylor College of Medicine with this year’s Young Alumna Award – Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Baylor’s annual Alumni Awards program recognizes alumni and faculty for excellence in research, teaching and patient care.

As part of the awards program, our honorees identify an area of the College they would like to highlight for support. Dr. Smriti A. Agrawal began her career at Baylor College of Medicine, where she focused on identification of the genetic causes of neurodegenerative disorders, utilizing NGS and clinical validation through CRISPR gene editing. Her work also led to the development of novel gene therapy based therapeutic treatments for blindness. After completing her Ph.D., Dr. Agrawal co-founded Lazarus 3D, a startup focused on pre-surgical planning, where she helped develop Pre-Sure technology,the first FDA-cleared technology that allows surgeons to physically rehearse complex soft-tissue surgeries. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she played a key role in providing PPE to the Texas Medical Center, helping to protect healthcare workers and reduce infection rates. Dr. Agrawal's persistence, passion, dedication to innovation and patients, and commitment to creating positive change in medicine have revolutionized surgical planning, ultimately improving patient outcomes and transforming the future of healthcare.
