O. H. “Bud” Frazier, M.D. ’67, Res. ’74 is being honored by Baylor College of Medicine as this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. Baylor’s annual Alumni Awards program recognizes alumni and faculty for excellence in research, teaching and patient care.

As part of the awards program, our honorees identify an area of the College they would like to highlight for support. Dr. Frazier, a pioneer in heart transplantation and artificial heart devices, serves as a professor in the Division of Cardiothoracic Transplantation and Circulatory Support in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor and co-director of the Center for Preclinical Surgical & Interventional Research at the Texas Heart Institute. With over 1,300 heart transplants and 1,000 left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) implanted, he has developed groundbreaking devices, such as the HeartMate I, Jarvik 2000, and the first successful continuous-flow total artificial heart. In 2024, his team implanted the BiVACOR total artificial heart, advancing the field significantly. His work has enabled the implantation of over 100,000 LVADs worldwide.
